Frequently Asked Questions

Temperature Guard Plus VM500-1 Frequently Asked Questions

How to use the Temperature Guard Plus
To have your chalet warm before your arrive, call the Temperature Guard Plus. Enter your personal PIN number and follow the voice instructions to select the menu option "Occupied Mode". The temperature of the chalet will now be controlled by the original room thermostats which have been left at their normal settings. (see Occupied Mode drawing above)

To reduce the temperature of your chalet when you are leaving, you can either press the change mode button on the Temperature Guard Plus or call the Temperature Guard Plus, enter your personal PIN number and follow the voice instructions to select the menu option "Unoccupied Mode". In the unoccupied mode, the temperature of the entire chalet is controlled by the unoccupied thermostat, which has been set to a value that will save energy, but not freeze the chalet. (see Unoccupied Mode drawing above)

Call and check on your chalet anytime. Call the Temperature Guard Plus, enter your PIN number and the Temperature Guard Plus will tell you the temperature and whether it is in the occupied or unoccupied mode.

What if the temperature of your chalet falls below the programmed warning temperature limit? The Temperature Guard Plus will continue to call the programmed emergency phone numbers until you enter your PIN number. If an answering machine, the Temperature Guard Plus will leave a warning message, but will not stop trying to reach you. The Temperature Guard Plus will also switch from the unoccupied mode to the occupied mode to raise the temperature of the chalet.

What if the power goes out at your chalet? The Temperature Guard Plus will wait five minutes, and if the power is still out, it will call and notify you.

What if the Security Input is opened? The Temperature Guard Plus will immediately begin calling the programmed emergency phone numbers, just as it does if the temperature falls below the warning temperature limit.

What happens when the temperature goes out of programmed limits?
1) The TGP begins to make emergency phone calls starting with the primary phone number.
2) If a person or answering machine answers the phone at the primary phone number, then the TG will say, "Warning the temperature is xx degrees.  Please enter you PIN number."  xx is the temperature in degrees F.  If an answering machine answers, the TGP will wait until your greeting message is over, and then it will leave the "Warning..." message.
3) The TGP will wait for a valid PIN number.
4) If a valid PIN number is entered, then the TGP will stop making emergency phone calls.
5) If a valid PIN number is not entered or an answering machine answers, then the TGP will continue making emergency phone calls with the second programmed phone number.
6) Once all the programmed phone numbers have been called the TGP will wait twenty minutes and begin making phone calls starting with the primary number.
7) Steps 1) through 6) are repeated until someone enters a valid PIN number or the temperature goes back to within limits.
8) If a new alarm condition occurs, steps 1 through 7 are repeated again.

Can a Temperature Guard Plus and an answering machine share the same line?
Yes, most answering machines answer the phone on the 4th ring.  To have the answering machine answer the phone, program the Temperature Guard Plus to answer the phone on the 5th ring.   To access the Temperature Guard Plus, call your home and let the phone ring 3 times.  Hang up and wait 20 seconds.  Call your home again and on the 2nd ring the Temperature Guard Plus will answer.

4-20 ma Sensor Monitor & Alarm VM500-4 Frequently Asked Questions

How does the VM500-4 work?

The VM500-4 is the perfect solution for monitoring up to seven self-powered, 4-20ma sensors of any type.

Programming Sensor Limits

There are seven items that need to be programmed for each sensor. The items are:

Record a sensor identification message (i.e. "Water pressure")
Record a sensor units of measurement message (i.e. "PSI")
Sensor output at 4 ma (i.e. 4ma = 15 PSI)
Sensor output at 20 ma (i.e. 20ma = 100 PSI)
High alarm limit programmed in unit of measurement (i.e. 75 PSI)
Low alarm limit programmed in unit of measurement (i.e. 25 PSI)
Call out delay time after sensor output goes out of limits. The delay is in seconds and the maximum is 255 seconds (i.e. 10 seconds)
These items identify and quantify each sensor and allows the VM500-4 to report the sensor's current output in an easily understandable format. For example, a pressure sensor is used to monitor a water line. The programmed limits are 15 to 100 PSI. If the water pressure goes of limits for 10 seconds, the VM500-4 will begin to make emergency phone calls. The VM500-4 will call all of the programmed phone numbers until the PIN number is entered. If an answering machine answers the phone, the VM500-4 will leave the alarm message, but it will not stop calling. Once all of the phone numbers have been dialed, the VM500-4 will wait fifteen minutes and then retry all phone numbers.

Example warning message

"Warning sensor one water pressure is 109 PSI enter your PIN number"

What is the minimum I need to buy to build a monitoring system?

  1. One VM500-4 for up to 7 sensors.
  2. If you do not already have a sensor, you can obtain one from us.

Can a VM500-4 and an answering machine or fax machine share the same line?

Yes.  To have the answering/fax machine answer the phone, program the VM500-4 to answer the phone on the 5th ring.   To access the VM500-4, call the number and let the phone ring 3 times.  Hang up and wait 20 seconds.  Call the number again and on the 2nd ring the VM500-4 will answer.

Refrigerator/Freezer Guard VM500-5 Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum I need to buy to build a monitoring system?

  1. One VM500-5 for every eight refrigerators and freezers.
  2. One temperature sensor for each refrigerator and freezer. (MAX 8 Sensors for 1 base unit)
  3. The amount of wire you will need to go from the sensor to the VM500-5.

How does the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard work?

Example 1: Temperature alarm condition
There are three items that need to be programmed for each sensor before monitoring can begin.  The items are:

  1. High alarm temperature limit (i.e. -5°C)
  2. Low alarm temperature limit (i.e. -30°C)
  3. Defrost cycle time delay in minutes (i.e. 45 minutes)
  4. Alarm reminder time delay (i.e. 2 hours)

Sensor 1 is installed in a freezer.  The max limit is -5°C and the min limit is -30°C and the defrost time delay is 45 minutes.  The temperature at the sensor raises to -4°C and above
After 45 minutes the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will turn on the alarm relay and buzzer and begin to make emergency phone calls.  The Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will call all of the programmed phone numbers until the PIN number is entered.  If an answering machine answers the phone, the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will leave the alarm message, but it will not stop calling.  Once all of the phone numbers have been dialed, the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will wait fifteen minutes and then retry all phone numbers.  The Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will continue this calling pattern until the PIN number is entered.

If after the PIN number is entered the temperature is still out of limits for 2 hours, the Alarm Reminder Feature will make the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard begin to make emergency phone calls again.

If the temperature in the freezer goes back within limits the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will stop making calls, and turn off the alarm relay and buzzer.

Temperature alarm message
"Warning the lab freezer sensor one temperature is 6 degrees and has been out of limits for 45 minutes.  Enter your PIN number" ( the lab freezer portion of the message is recorded by the user).

If the alarm condition is acknowledged but the temperature is still out of limits after the Alarm reminder time delay has expired, the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will begin to make emergency phone calls.

Example 2: Door Open input alarm condition
The Door Open Input has been programmed with a 10 minute time delay.  After the door is left open for more than 10 minutes, the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard goes into alarm condition and begins to make emergency phone calls in the same manner as a temperature alarm condition.

Input alarm message
"Warning door is open for 11 minutes.  Enter your PIN number"

Can a Refrigerator/Freezer Guard and an answering machine or fax machine share the same line?

Yes.  To have the answering/fax machine answer the phone, program the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard to answer the phone on the 5th ring.   To access the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard, call the number and let the phone ring 3 times.  Hang up and wait 20 seconds.  Call the number again and on the 2nd ring the Refrigerator/Freezer Guard will answer.

How do you enter a negative number when programming a temperature limit.

To enter a negative limits, press the * key and then enter the number.  For example, to enter -15 degrees, press the *15 and then the pound.  You will here "negative 15 degrees".

Input Guard VM500-6 Frequently Asked Questions

How does the VM500-6-xx work?

There are three parameters that need to be programmed for each input.  They are whether the input is normally open or normally closed, the amount of time to wait after the input changes state to go into alarm condition and a recordable message describing the input.

Input alarm condition example
Input 1 has been programmed to be normally open with a 10 second time delay.  The contacts wired to input 2 closes.  After the input is closed for 10 seconds, the VM500-6 goes into alarm condition and begins to make emergency phone calls.   The VM500-6 will call all of the programmed phone numbers until the PIN number is entered.  If an answering machine answers the phone, the VM500-6 will leave the alarm message, but it will not stop calling.  Once all of the phone numbers have been dialed, the VM500-6 will wait twenty minutes and then retry all phone numbers.

Input alarm message
"Warning alarm has been caused by input 1" & your recorded message & "enter your PIN number"
